Pakistan proposes Gilani-Singh meet

Posted by muhammad imran

slamabad : Pakistan has proposed a meeting between Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh at a regional summit in Bhutan later this month, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

Both prime ministers will attend the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) that will be held in Bhutan from April 28-29.

Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that Pakistan had proposed a road map first in New York and then at foreign secretaries level meeting in New Delhi on February 25, and the response from the Indian side is still awaited.

“The road map also included the meeting between the two Prime Ministers on the sidelines of the SAARC conference in Bhutan,” he said.

Abdul Basit said Pakistan seeks meaningful dialogue with India for lasting peace on the basis of sovereign equality and mutual respect.

He said Pakistan has serious concerns on the construction of dams in Indian-controlled Kashmir particularly Kishan Ganga project. He said Pakistan is moving very fast on this particular project and wants to resolve it according to Indus water Basin Treaty, signed in 1960s about the distribution of water.

“If India does not want to settle the issue, we would have to go to the World Bank to resolve this issue”.
